¶ 1 After a jury trial, the defendant, William Coty, who is intellectually disabled, 1 was convicted, inter alia , of predatory *1108 criminal sexual assault of a minor. Because the defendant had a prior conviction for aggravated criminal sexual assault, pursuant to section 12-14.1(b)(2) of the Criminal Code of 1961 (Criminal Code) ( 720 ILCS 5/12-14.1(b)(2) (West 2004) ), 2 the trial court had no discretion but to sentence him to mandatory natural life in prison without the possibility of parole.
