The defendant was tried upon an indictment

charging him with having killed his wife at Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence county, on the 20th day of May, 1896. After a trial lasting seven or eight days, and involving the examination of a large number of witnesses, the jury rendered a verdict of murder in the first degrea The act of killing was not seriously disputed, but the stress of the trial was over two principal defenses, viz. insanity and failing in that, the absence of deliberate and premeditated design to effect the death of the deceased, necessary to constitute the crime of murder in the first…
