In January, 1894,' Lonsby & Wolf were owners of a one-eighth' interest in the steam barge Thomas D. Stimson, the entire vessel being at the time subjectto a mortgage of $8,666.66. An arrangement was made between the plaintiff and defendant by which the latter was to lend his credit to the plaintiff to enable him to purchase from Lonsby & Wolf this interest in the vessel.'
