On August 31, 1996, police officers responding to a call at the home of the defendant and his wife Carla Lockwood found the emaciated remains of Nadine Lockwood, their daughter, in a filthy crib. She weighed 15 pounds, and looked like little more than a skeleton. The officers were shocked to discover that Na*230dine would have been five years old had she lived another 19 days.
Subsequently, medical evidence would reveal that Nadine had been starved since infancy and towards the end she “began to break down her own internal organs to sustain her life.” Police…
