The action is based on a written instrument, signed by appellants, and reading as follows:—
“$2,000. Los Angeles, Cal., July 19th, 1895.
“Thirty days after the completion of the double-track street railway of the- Los Angeles Traction Company to the intersection of Seventh and Hoover Streets, for value received, I promise to pay to the order of the Los Angeles Traction Company, the sum of two thousand (2,000) dollars, negotiable and payable at Citizens’ Bank, with interest at the rate of eight per cent per annum, payable after maturity.
