Defendant was convicted in the circuit court of St. Clair County of six counts of theft over $150 and was sentenced to eight years in the Department of Corrections. The conviction and sentence occurred in absentia. Defendant’s trial counsel caused a timely notice of appeal to be filed on August 30, 1982, and the State Appellate Defender was appointed to represent him on appeal. Defendant subsequently has been placed in the custody of the Department of Corrections and is presently serving out his sentence and actively participating in this appeal.
