The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (Commission) was created in 1927 by Chapter 448 of the Laws of the General Assembly for that year. The law created a district, known then as the Maryland-Washington Metropolitan District, in the Maryland suburban area contiguous to Washington, D. C., and included in that district approximately all of what is now enclosed by the Capital Beltway in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties.
