Mylon Cross and Ronald Williams were charged by an information filed on April 28,1978 with the offenses of rape (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1977, ch. 38, par. 11—1) and deviate sexual assault (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1977, ch. 38, par. 11—3). The public defender was appointed to represent each defendant. On August 11, 1978 the information was amended to charge each defendant additionally with three counts of aggravated kidnapping (Ill. Rev.
