The respondent, Robert Martel, appeals from a final decree of divorce issued by the Portsmouth Family Division (Sadler, J.). The petitioner, Susan Martel, cross-appeals. We affirm in part, reverse in part, vacate in part and remand.

I. Background

The record supports the following. The parties married in November 1985 and had one child in July 1988. The petitioner filed for divorce in April 2005 alleging the fault grounds of adultery, RSA 458:7, II (2004), and treatment so serious as “to injure health or endanger reason,” RSA 458:7, V (2004).
