The issue raised by this appeal is whether defendant was denied a fair trial because of prosecutorial misconduct.

In the spring of 1990, Lance Carter, who was in jail on pending burglary charges, contacted Detective John Chella of the Niagara Falls Police Department and made a deal to buy drugs from certain people named by Carter in exchange for a reduced sentence. Pursuant to that arrangement, Carter agreed to purchase cocaine from defendant, who, according to Carter, was his "friend”.
