A jury awarded Ruth C. Deneen compensatory and punitive damages on her claim of pregnancy discrimination in employment against Northwest Airlines, Inc. (NWA). NWA sought judgment as a matter of law, which the district court 1 granted in part by striking the jury’s award of punitive damages. NWA appeals, arguing that Mrs. De-neen did not prove unlawful discrimination and that her claims are precluded by the Railway Labor Act (RLA), 46 U.S.C. § 151 (1994).
