Defendant, Deon Patrick, was charged by indictment with eight counts of first degree murder (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 9 — 1 (now 720 ILCS 5/9 — 1 (West 1996))), two counts of home invasion (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 12 — 11(a) (now 720 ILCS 5/12 — 11(a) (West 1996))), and one count of armed robbery (Ill. Rev. Stat. 1989, ch. 38, par. 18 — 2(a) (now 720 ILCS 5/18 — 2(a) (West 1996))). Following a jury trial, defendant was convicted of two counts of murder, two counts of home invasion, and one count of armed robbery. He was sentenced to natural life in prison without parole…
