Robert Pressley was the first black police officer in Wheeling, Illinois. For years he remained the only black employee of that village. Occasional unpleasant incidents marred his life, but most of his colleagues were friendly and the rest tractable. When Michael Haeger arrived as chief of police in February 1982, Pressley told him about problems he occasionally had with two officers, including the posting of racially offensive cartoons.
