CARPENTER, District Judge.
On October 19, 1909, the steamer' Markham was bound up the Chicago river, and while opposite Polk street signaled for the Taylor street bridge. The first signal was given when about 800 feet from the bridge. The Markham was proceeding under slow check, as slow, in fact, as it was possible for her to go and maintain steerage. It was about 5 o’clock in the morning. The atmosphere was clear, and the captain could see the two red lights in the center of the bridge.
