On February 27, 1989, the appellant, James Lee Hastings, was convicted of second-degree escape, first-degree robbery, and first-degree burglary. On April 14, 1989, the trial court sentenced him, as a habitual offender, to imprisonment for life without the possibility of parole on the first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary convictions and to serve a consecutive term of life in prison on the second-degree escape conviction.See § 13A-5-9(c), Ala.
