This case concerns the legality of police roadblocks established in furtherance of a state operated sobriety checkpoint program to detect and deter drunk driving.

As part of an effort to stop drunk driving, the Maryland State Police augmented its conventional enforcement methods by erecting systematic roadblocks on state roads having high alcohol related accident rates.
