On the trial it was undisputed that the plaintiff and defendant became first acquainted in 1869, when she was a girl of sixteen and he a man of thirty-eight, both being in the service of one Clark in Hartford, she as a housemaid, and he as a gardener; that in 1872 she married one Gorman, who separated himself from her in 1888, returning after four years, leaving her again in 1901, and-dying in April, 1903 ; and that in the latter year the defendant was a farmer in Ashford, having represented his town three times in the General Assembly and also in the Constitutional Convention…
