¶1 This case asks us to determine whether it is proper for the State to seize by ex parte order the personal property of a pretrial detainee who is transferred to Western State Hospital for a competency evaluation. Jesie Pele Puapuaga, who is charged with second degree murder, was transferred to Western State Hospital for a competency evaluation. Upon arrival, Puapuaga’s items were inventoried by hospital staff.
