In the early hours of April 8, 2001, State Trooper Steven Baggett observed the truck driven by Mark Edward Compton traveling at a speed Baggett said was approximately eighty miles per hour. Compton slowed, came to a stop at a red traffic light, and then proceeded to drive through the still-red light before Baggett pulled him over to the side of the road. When Baggett approached and began questioning Compton, he noticed Compton’s speech was slurred and his breath smelled of alcohol.
