The plaintiffs, by their guardians and next friends, filed claims in the Worcester Division of the District Court *713seeking compensation, pursuant to G. L. c. 258A, § 1 (1984 ed.),2 as dependents of their mother, a deceased victim of violent crime. After hearing, the judge awarded the plaintiffs $9,900, the maximum recovery permitted under G. L. c. 258A, to be apportioned equally among them. See G. L. c. 258A, § 5. The Commonwealth claimed a report to the Appellate Division for the Western District. G. L. c. 231, § 108 (1984 ed.).
