The Republic of Guinea is one of the world’s principal sources of bauxite, an aluminum ore. After Guinea declared inde-' pendence from France in the middle of the last century, it sought to ensure that the exploitation of its natural resources would not only provide business for multinational corporations based overseas that invested in the ore’s extraction, but would also benefit the Guinean economy.
