In 1991, defendant, Alcurtis Jackson, pleaded guilty to heinous battery (720 ILCS 5/12 — 4.1(a) (West 1994)) and was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment. On direct appeal from the denial of defendant’s motion to vacate his guilty plea and dismissal of his postconviction petition, this court remanded the cause for a hearing on defendant’s motion to withdraw his guilty plea. On remand, the trial court allowed defendant to withdraw his guilty plea and the case proceeded to a jury trial. Following the jury trial, defendant was again…
