After a fifteen-day jury-waived trial in the Superior Court, the defendant was convicted of one count of larceny by false pretenses of an amount over $250, in violation of G. L. c. 266, § 30, and twenty-five counts of uttering forged instruments, in violation of G. L. c. 267, § 5. These charges, and *279others,1 arose from the defendant’s operation of an employee leasing business. The thrust of the case was that the defendant knowingly submitted false, understated payroll information in order to obtain a workers’ compensation policy at a reduced premium, and created and distributed false…
