Mercure, J.

Barbara Goetke was last seen leaving a bar with defendant in the early morning hours of April 17, 1982.* Three days later her body was found in a remote area of Rensselaer County. Death was attributed to numerous chopping wounds consistent with blows inflicted by an axe. In the course of their investigation of the murder, police seized an axe (the Mullins axe) in connection with a search of defendant’s residence.
