The defendant, Randy Kirsch, appeals1 from the judgment of conviction, rendered after a jury trial, of manslaughter in the first degree in violation of General Statutes § 53a-55 (a) (3),2 manslaughter in the second degree with a motor vehicle in violation of General Statutes § 53a-56b,3 and operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor or drugs in violation of General Statutes (Rev. to 1997) § 14-227a (a).4 The defendant claims that the trial court improperly: (1) failed to conduct a hearing, pursuant to State v.
