On June 28, 1968, the respondent, Julio A. Melendez, was adjudged in criminal contempt of the circuit court of Cook County for his failure, after the issuance of a writ of habeas corpus, to produce Liza Jane Melendez, the minor child of him and the petitioner, Phyllis Jane Roselle. The circuit court ordered him committed to the county jail for a term of one year.
