hThe defendant, Alvin Brumfield, appeals his conviction for the crime of theft. For the reasons that follow, we reverse his conviction.

As a preface to our discussion of this case, we note the incompleteness of the record on appeal coming to us from the Criminal District Court for the Parish of Orleans, bearing docket number 499-731C.
