PROCEDURAL HISTORY

This employment discrimination case, brought by two black women against their white former employer, was tried from February 25, 1991 to March 4, 1991. The claims submitted to the jury included plaintiff Mayse’s claims under the common law: 1) that defendants had terminated Mayse’s employment in bad faith in contravention of the public policy of North Carolina; 2) that defendants had intentionally caused Mayse to suffer extreme emotional distress; and 3) that Mayse was entitled to actual and punitive damages because of…
