OPINION OF THE COURT

Milonas, J.

In 1958 during the final months of the Batista regime, plaintiff-appellant, a Cuban citizen, at various times obtained five certificates of deposit, totaling $227,336.47, from defendant-respondent Chase Manhattan Bank’s Mar*403ianao branch in Havana.* The forces of Fidel Castro assumed control of the Cuban government on January 1, 1959, and plaintiff’s husband, who had been Batista’s Minister of Communications, fled to Colombia in March of 1959. Plaintiff later joined her husband in Colombia, but she then returned to Cuba, where she remained for a number of months.…
