CAPPY, Justice.

The question presented is one of first impression: when considering a petition to change the name of a minor child, by what standard should the trial court exercise its discretion.1 In accordance with the majority of jurisdictions in the United States we declare the best interest of the child to be the appropriate focus in such cases. However, in the case at bar we find the record devoid of any competent evidence that changing this child’s name was in his best interest.
