The petitioner, Grover Crooks, seeks a writ of habeas corpus to secure his release from the custody of the Superintendent of the State Penitentiary. On November 10, 1916, said petitioner, under indictment for assault and battery with intent to kill, was convicted in the Court of General Sessions for Oconee Co.unty, and sentenced by the presiding Judge to “Be confined upon the public works of Oconee County, or in the State Penitentiary, at hard labor for a term of six years.” Pursuant to the terms of that sentence, Crooks was…
