The defendant, Gerald Gerardi, was convicted of possession of a machine gun for an aggressive *350and offensive purpose in violation of General Statutes § 53-202 (c),1 which provides: “Any person who pos*351sesses or uses a machine gun for an offensive or aggressive purpose shall be fined not more than one thousand dollars or imprisoned not less than five years nor more than ten years or be both fined and imprisoned.” Subsection (d) of § 53-202 provides in relevant part: “The possession or use of a machine gun shall be presumed to be for an offensive or aggressive purpose ...
