On January 12, 1974 Amanda Titus was in her kitchen at 791 Atlantic Avenue in Rochester cooking chicken in a dutch oven on a stove burner set on "high”. Her daughter, Lakiescha, not quite two years old at the time, was in a playpen in the adjoining dining room. The mother left the kitchen for a few minutes to go into the bathroom and while there smelled smoke. Upon returning to the kitchen she found that the oil in the dutch oven had caught fire, causing flames to shoot up the wall. She tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire. It spread to the ceiling.…
