OPINION OF THE COURT
ALITO, Circuit Judge.
This case concerns a dispute between the Cleveland Pneumatic Company (“Cleveland”) and Gladys M. Gridley, the wife of a former Cleveland employee, Joseph Grid-ley, regarding Mrs. Gridley’s entitlement to increased life insurance benefits provided by an amendment to the company’s group life insurance plan that took effect after Mr. Gridley ceased active work due to terminal cancer. The district court held that Mrs. Gridley was not entitled to the increased benefits under the terms of the group life policy because Mr. Gridley was never “actively at work”…
