Martha E. Gillespie, also known as M. E. Gillespie, was an elderly woman, who had lived the life of a recluse and became possessed of a fortune of approximately $75,000 in government bonds and other securities, payable to bearer and not registered. On April 6, 1933, these bonds were in a safety deposit box in the Fidelity Savings Bank of Marshalltown. Mrs. Gillespie had lost her key to the box and was obsessed with the idea that her bonds had been removed from the bank.
