This case is an example of how dilatory and cumbersome the administrative and judicial process can be in disposing of disability claims under the Social Security Act. The plaintiff-appellant, Geraldine Whitney, brings this suit under 42 U.S.C. § 405(g) for judicial review of a final decision of the Secretary of Health and Human Services denying her application for a period of disability and disability insurance benefits, as provided by §§ 216(i) and 223 of the Act, 42 U.S.C. §§ 416(i), 423.
