On April 28, 2010, a jury in the Circuit Court for Baltimore City convicted Orville Cooper (“Cooper”) of second degree rape and multiple counts of second, third, and fourth degree *213sexual offenses and one count of second degree assault. After filing a motion for a new trial, Cooper filed a timely appeal to the Court of Special Appeals, and prior to the intermediate appellate court rendering a decision, we granted certiorari on our own motion, 427 Md. 606, 50 A.3d 605 (2012), to address questions raised by Cooper:
