KANNE, Circuit Judge.

At about 11:15 PM, on Interstate 155 near Hopedale, Illinois, State Police Trooper Ricky Jackson stopped the Chevrolet El Camino Milton Walden and Colleen Watkins were riding in because it had a defective left taillight. Watkins was driving; Walden was asleep in the passenger seat. Walden’s ten-year-old son Jesse was riding in the center of the seat. None of the occupants of the car were wearing seatbelts.
