The defendant, Augusto Moráis, was convicted by a jury of rape of a child and indecent assault and battery on a child under the age of fourteen. In this appeal, the defendant argues that his motion to suppress his statements to a Depart*381ment of Social Services (department) investigator and his subsequent statements to Chelmsford police officers should have been granted.
