On the night of September 28, 1948, Henry Sehoonveld was driving his car in a westerly direction on Illinois Route No. 17 in the city limits of Kankakee, Illinois. At the same time Robert Blanchette was driving a motorbus owned by the Kankakee Motor Coach Company, in an easterly direction on the same highway. St. Joseph Street in the city of Kankakee intersects Route No. 17. The Sehoonveld car was being driven on the north side of the highway and the bus on the south side.
