The State of Washington assigns error to a Court of Appeals opinion reversing a trial court decision to commence trial in defendant Hammond's absence. We affirm the Court of Appeals' reversal of the trial court.

Robert Hammond was arrested in California on June 16, 1988, on a Benton County District Court complaint and warrant dated February 16, 1988. Bail was set, and Hammond was held in custody at the Benton County Jail. An attorney was appointed for him.
