On November 6, 1998, the defendant was indicted as a “youthful offender”2 for assault and battery in violation "of G. L. c. 265, § 13A, and assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon in violation of G. L. c. 265, § 15A(6). See G. L. c. 119, § 54. The defendant waived his right to a jury trial and was tried in Brockton Juvenile Court. At the close of the Commonwealth’s case, the defendant’s motions for a required finding of not guilty on each of the two indictments were denied, and he was found guilty on both indictments.
