The defendant, William Smith, was charged with murder in violation of General Statutes § 53a-54a (a)1 and conspiracy to commit murder in violation of General Statutes §§ 53a-482 and 53a-54a (a). His first trial *595ended in a mistrial when the jury was unable to reach a verdict. In a second trial, a jury found the defendant guilty of both murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
