In 1899 there were twelve different corporations, associations or individuals engaged respectively in managing and conducting a professional base ball club. Each was located in a city by itself. Altogether they constituted what was known as the “ National League and American Association of Professional Base Ball Clubs.”' This league and association was governed and controlled by a constitution and agreement.
