delivered the opinion of the court:

Mary Ann Conway (the decedent) was admitted to the University of Chicago Hospital (Hospital) on July 21, 1978. At the time of her admission she was six days postpartum, and pursuant to hospital policy, she was admitted to the obstetrical and gynecological service. Her chief complaint on admission was severe back pain and shortness of breath. The following day, the decedent left the Hospital against medical advice and was admitted to Cook County Hospital, where she died several hours later. An autopsy revealed that the cause of death…
