This case involves a suit for damages by an employee who claims that the termination of his employment constituted a breach of contract.

On December 31, 1969, Charles E. Garland entered into a written employment contract with H & R Block, Inc. The contract was initially for a term of two years, and it was renewed annually thereafter. The agreement provided that Mr. Garland was to assume managerial responsibilities for the operation of offices maintained by H & R Block for the preparation of tax returns.
