This appeal arose from two orders awarding attorneys’ fees and court costs totaling $45,070.24 against Lawrence Julius Taylor, the defendant in a paternity and child support action.

On 28 March 1980, Kathy Louise Davis gave birth to Whitney Taylor Davis. At that time, Kathy Davis and Lawrence Taylor were students at the University of North Carolina. After the birth of Whitney, Davis and Taylor discussed whether Taylor would pay to support Whitney.
