In this action plaintiffs seek damages for negligent surgery and for surgery performed without informed consent. On March 2, 1979, plaintiff Bernard Nisenholtz, who had been suffering from ulcerative colitis for more than 10 years, underwent a proctocoloctomy (the removal of his colon and rectum). The surgery was performed by defendants Gelernt, Kreel, and Bauer, although defendant Bauer played a relatively minor role.
