Appeal from a judgment of the superior court for King county, Griffin, J., entered March 30, 1903, upon the verdict of a jury rendered in favor of the plaintiff for $7,633 damages for personal injuries sustained through a fall caused by a projecting trap door in the sidewalk.

The respondents are husband and wife, and this action was brought to recover damages for alleged personal injuries sustained by respondent Christina D. Smith. It is alleged that, at the time the injuries were re*483ceived and for many months prior thereto, the defendant, the city of Seattle, had negligently maintained, and permitted to exist in an unprotected and dangerous condition, certain trap doors upon the sidewalk, which doors opened into a cellar underneath the sidewalk on Second avenue in said city.
