Abstract
From August 1971 to September 1975 a total of 15476 women with parities ranging from 2 to 14 underwent tubal sterilization by a minilaparotomy procedure at the rural medical college in Bankura India. These sterilizations were both postpartum and interval. The specific minilaparotomy procedure used is described and pictured. By April 1975 the procedure was being used in a field situation in 9 centers where basic medical graduates were serving. 1 death resulted from the total of cases. The complication and pregnancy rates for the series were extremely low. Thus this operation under local anesthesia was found to be easy and safe. This technique can be considered a revolutionary procedure for voluntary sterilization and is suitable for practice on a mass scale in rural India. Medical graduates working in the Health Centres can be trained quickly in the procedure. It seems that rural women will accept the procedure. In the future it will be possible to perform the procedure on an outpatient basis.
